HERE ARE 3 MAJOR SUSTAINABLE FOOD TRENDS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

  • Plant-Based – is a lifestyle adjustment that consists of foods derived from plants. These foods consist of beans, legumes, grains, fruits, vegetables & minimum-to-no animal products. More consumers are concerned about animal welfare and global warming, and the effects that one has on the other. Even some meat-eaters are considering the term flexitarian; a semi-vegetarian diet centered around plant-based foods and occasional meats.
  • Cultured Meats that utilize cell culture instead of slaughtering an animal. This process is called cellular agriculture. If you’re familiar with regenerative medicine you’ll understand that the technique is very similar. The meat industry, according to some analysts, has a high carbon footprint. And our animals are being mistreated.
  • Food Markets – are restructuring their store layouts to help promote more plant-based options, fair-trade, eco-friendly and animal welfare. Many of the plant-based meats, seems like they are being placed next to the meat sections. This allows the consumer to choose which item is the best choice for their dietary needs. Is the manufacturing of any of these meat-less products actually sustainable for the economy and our bodies? It’s important to do your own research as well.

Speaking of sustainable businesses, Fast company featured a start-up company called Fresh Bowl. They raised roughly $2.1M, to help open 50 vending machines throughout New York City. It’s a perfect niche to help keep the average busy New Yorker healthy while on the go. The premise of their business model is similar to a person renting a city bike at one location and return it to another location. Fresh Bowl aims to do exactly that. You’ll pick up your favorite salad in a glass jar at one location and drop it off at another location. Their goal is to create easy access to healthy eating for all lifestyles. Now if eating on the go is going to become more of a normal thing, could this way of eating be a negative impact on those with digestive issues? That’s something to think about.

The hustle and bustle in New York City comes with an expensive price and, unfortunately, that’s your health. Forgetting to eat healthy or practice mindful preventive measures to stay healthy may not affect you now in the short term, but in the long term it can be very detrimental to your wellbeing. When companies like Fresh Bowl are creating an opportunity to better your health while supporting a sustainable approach, it shows how much they care for the consumer and for our planet.

Healthy food should be readily available for all, but the actual process of making this happen should always be viewed from a mindset that is focused on the importance of treating animals fairly, sustainability, fair trade, water consumption and any eco-friendly practices that you can incorporate along the way. This is our planet and it’s time that we start caring about its healing and longevity.
